This commit is the first in a series of commits that will rework some of the methods responsible for escaping pathnames. Some of these methods simply don't use the features that Vim has properly. The custom "Path._escChars()" method is far too rigid for our purposes, and better options have been available for some time. See ":h fnameescape()" for an especially helpful function in this effort.
The NERDTree
Introduction
The NERDTree is a file system explorer for the Vim editor. Using this plugin, users can visually browse complex directory hierarchies, quickly open files for reading or editing, and perform basic file system operations.
This plugin can also be extended with custom mappings using a special API. The details of this API and of other NERDTree features are described in the included documentation.
Installation
pathogen.vim
git clone https://github.com/scrooloose/nerdtree.git ~/.vim/bundle/nerdtree
Then reload Vim, run :helptags ~/.vim/bundle/nerdtree/doc/, and check out :help NERDTree.txt.

Yes, install nerdtree-git-plugin.
Can I have the nerdtree on every tab automatically?

This window is tab-specific, meaning it's used by all windows in the tab. This trick also prevents NERDTree from hiding when first selecting a file.

Stick this in your vimrc to open NERDTree with Ctrl+n (you can set whatever key you want):
