### As Vim plugin
2013-10-22 21:26:55 -04:00
2016-09-12 15:11:28 -04:00
You can manually add the directory to `&runtimepath` as follows,
2013-10-22 21:26:55 -04:00
2014-03-03 21:25:50 -05:00
```vim
2016-09-12 15:11:28 -04:00
" If installed using git
2014-03-03 21:25:50 -05:00
set rtp+=~/.fzf
2016-09-12 15:11:28 -04:00
" If installed using Homebrew
set rtp+=/usr/local/opt/fzf
2014-03-03 21:25:50 -05:00
```
2013-10-22 21:26:55 -04:00
2016-09-12 15:11:28 -04:00
But it's recommended that you use a plugin manager like
[vim-plug ](https://github.com/junegunn/vim-plug ).
2014-09-02 00:06:05 -04:00
```vim
2015-10-23 01:56:27 -04:00
Plug 'junegunn/fzf', { 'dir': '~/.fzf', 'do': './install --all' }
2014-09-02 00:06:05 -04:00
```
2013-10-22 21:26:55 -04:00
2016-11-08 11:45:27 -05:00
### Windows
2017-03-07 09:03:14 -05:00
Pre-built binaries for Windows can be downloaded [here][bin]. fzf is also
available as a [Chocolatey package][choco].
[choco]: https://chocolatey.org/packages/fzf
```sh
choco install fzf
```
However, other components of the project may not work on Windows. You might
want to consider installing fzf on [Windows Subsystem for Linux][wsl] where
everything runs flawlessly.

Upgrading fzf
-------------
fzf is being actively developed and you might want to upgrade it once in a
while. Please follow the instruction below depending on the installation
method used.
- git: `cd ~/.fzf && git pull && ./install`
- brew: `brew update; brew reinstall fzf`
2017-03-29 12:59:41 -04:00
- chocolatey: `choco upgrade fzf`
2017-01-31 07:43:41 -05:00
- vim-plug: `:PlugUpdate fzf`
2016-11-27 01:16:53 -05:00
Building fzf
------------
See [BUILD.md ](BUILD.md ).
2013-10-22 21:26:55 -04:00
Usage
-----
2017-04-05 13:08:49 -04:00
fzf will launch interactive finder, read the list from STDIN, and write the
2013-10-22 21:26:55 -04:00
selected item to STDOUT.
```sh
find * -type f | fzf > selected
```
Without STDIN pipe, fzf will use find command to fetch the list of
2013-11-01 23:56:43 -04:00
files excluding hidden ones. (You can override the default command with
`FZF_DEFAULT_COMMAND` )
2013-10-22 21:26:55 -04:00
```sh
2013-11-06 06:54:02 -05:00
vim $(fzf)
2013-10-22 21:26:55 -04:00
```
2015-03-06 04:57:36 -05:00
#### Using the finder
2013-11-09 13:56:18 -05:00
2016-11-08 09:41:46 -05:00
- `CTRL-J` / `CTRL-K` (or `CTRL-N` / `CTRL-P` ) to move cursor up and down
2015-03-06 04:57:36 -05:00
- `Enter` key to select the item, `CTRL-C` / `CTRL-G` / `ESC` to exit
- On multi-select mode (`-m`), `TAB` and `Shift-TAB` to mark multiple items
- Emacs style key bindings
- Mouse: scroll, click, double-click; shift-click and shift-scroll on
multi-select mode
2014-03-06 06:52:38 -05:00
2017-01-07 11:30:31 -05:00
#### Layout
fzf by default starts in fullscreen mode, but you can make it start below the
cursor with `--height` option.
```sh
vim $(fzf --height 40%)
```
Also check out `--reverse` option if you prefer "top-down" layout instead of
the default "bottom-up" layout.
```sh
vim $(fzf --height 40% --reverse)
```
You can add these options to `$FZF_DEFAULT_OPTS` so that they're applied by
2017-02-04 07:51:22 -05:00
default. For example,
2017-01-07 11:30:31 -05:00
```sh
2017-02-04 07:51:22 -05:00
export FZF_DEFAULT_OPTS='--height 40% --reverse --border'
2017-01-07 11:30:31 -05:00
```
2015-11-03 13:16:36 -05:00
#### Search syntax
Unless otherwise specified, fzf starts in "extended-search mode" where you can
type in multiple search terms delimited by spaces. e.g. `^music .mp3$ sbtrkt
2016-10-03 13:17:36 -04:00
!fire`
| Token | Match type | Description |
| -------- | -------------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| `sbtrkt` | fuzzy-match | Items that match `sbtrkt` |
| `^music` | prefix-exact-match | Items that start with `music` |
| `.mp3$` | suffix-exact-match | Items that end with `.mp3` |
| `'wild` | exact-match (quoted) | Items that include `wild` |
| `!fire` | inverse-exact-match | Items that do not include `fire` |
| `!.mp3$` | inverse-suffix-exact-match | Items that do not end with `.mp3` |
2013-11-15 06:40:57 -05:00
2015-09-12 00:31:07 -04:00
If you don't prefer fuzzy matching and do not wish to "quote" every word,
2015-11-03 08:49:32 -05:00
start fzf with `-e` or `--exact` option. Note that when `--exact` is set,
`'` -prefix "unquotes" the term.
2014-03-04 07:29:45 -05:00
2015-11-08 10:58:20 -05:00
A single bar character term acts as an OR operator. For example, the following
query matches entries that start with `core` and end with either `go` , `rb` ,
or `py` .
```
^core go$ | rb$ | py$
```
2015-06-21 12:35:36 -04:00
#### Environment variables
- `FZF_DEFAULT_COMMAND`
- Default command to use when input is tty
2015-11-03 13:14:38 -05:00
- e.g. `export FZF_DEFAULT_COMMAND='ag -g ""'`
2015-06-21 12:35:36 -04:00
- `FZF_DEFAULT_OPTS`
2015-11-03 13:14:38 -05:00
- Default options
- e.g. `export FZF_DEFAULT_OPTS="--reverse --inline-info"`
2015-06-21 12:35:36 -04:00
2016-10-31 11:39:02 -04:00
#### Options
See the man page (`man fzf`) for the full list of options.
2015-03-06 04:57:36 -05:00
Examples
--------
2013-10-22 21:26:55 -04:00
2015-03-06 04:57:36 -05:00
Many useful examples can be found on [the wiki
page](https://github.com/junegunn/fzf/wiki/examples). Feel free to add your
own as well.
2014-05-02 10:38:36 -04:00
2016-05-02 11:07:53 -04:00
`fzf-tmux` script
-----------------
[fzf-tmux ](bin/fzf-tmux ) is a bash script that opens fzf in a tmux pane.
```sh
# usage: fzf-tmux [-u|-d [HEIGHT[%]]] [-l|-r [WIDTH[%]]] [--] [FZF OPTIONS]
# (-[udlr]: up/down/left/right)
# select git branches in horizontal split below (15 lines)
git branch | fzf-tmux -d 15
# select multiple words in vertical split on the left (20% of screen width)
cat /usr/share/dict/words | fzf-tmux -l 20% --multi --reverse
```
It will still work even when you're not on tmux, silently ignoring `-[udlr]`
options, so you can invariably use `fzf-tmux` in your scripts.
2017-01-07 11:30:31 -05:00
Alternatively, you can use `--height HEIGHT[%]` option not to start fzf in
fullscreen mode.
```sh
fzf --height 40%
```
2013-12-21 10:22:23 -05:00
Key bindings for command line
-----------------------------
2013-12-21 10:18:41 -05:00
2014-05-03 23:52:33 -04:00
The install script will setup the following key bindings for bash, zsh, and
fish.
2013-12-21 10:18:41 -05:00
2015-06-25 12:00:58 -04:00
- `CTRL-T` - Paste the selected files and directories onto the command line
- Set `FZF_CTRL_T_COMMAND` to override the default command
2016-06-12 07:37:17 -04:00
- Set `FZF_CTRL_T_OPTS` to pass additional options
2015-06-25 12:00:58 -04:00
- `CTRL-R` - Paste the selected command from history onto the command line
2017-03-02 22:20:01 -05:00
- If you want to see the commands in chronological order, press `CTRL-R`
again which toggles sorting by relevance
2016-06-12 07:37:17 -04:00
- Set `FZF_CTRL_R_OPTS` to pass additional options
2013-12-21 10:18:41 -05:00
- `ALT-C` - cd into the selected directory
2016-05-02 11:07:53 -04:00
- Set `FZF_ALT_C_COMMAND` to override the default command
2016-06-12 07:37:17 -04:00
- Set `FZF_ALT_C_OPTS` to pass additional options
2013-11-08 11:16:39 -05:00
2017-01-07 11:30:31 -05:00
If you're on a tmux session, you can start fzf in a split pane by setting
`FZF_TMUX` to 1, and change the height of the pane with `FZF_TMUX_HEIGHT`
(e.g. `20` , `50%` ).
2014-03-27 12:39:20 -04:00
2014-05-03 23:52:33 -04:00
If you use vi mode on bash, you need to add `set -o vi` *before* `source
~/.fzf.bash` in your .bashrc, so that it correctly sets up key bindings for vi
mode.

Fuzzy completion for bash and zsh
---------------------------------
2013-11-19 11:29:36 -05:00
2013-11-29 04:08:22 -05:00
#### Files and directories
2013-11-29 03:49:48 -05:00
Fuzzy completion for files and directories can be triggered if the word before
the cursor ends with the trigger sequence which is by default `**` .
2013-11-23 06:09:56 -05:00
- `COMMAND [DIRECTORY/][FUZZY_PATTERN]**<TAB>`
2013-11-19 11:29:36 -05:00
```sh
2013-11-19 11:42:57 -05:00
# Files under current directory
# - You can select multiple items with TAB key
2013-11-19 11:29:36 -05:00
vim ** < TAB >
2013-11-19 11:42:57 -05:00
# Files under parent directory
2013-11-23 06:09:56 -05:00
vim ../**< TAB >
# Files under parent directory that match `fzf`
vim ../fzf**< TAB >
2013-11-19 11:42:57 -05:00
# Files under your home directory
2013-11-19 11:29:36 -05:00
vim ~/**< TAB >
cd ** < TAB >
2013-11-19 11:42:57 -05:00
2013-11-23 06:09:56 -05:00
# Directories under ~/github that match `fzf`
cd ~/github/fzf**< TAB >
2013-11-19 11:29:36 -05:00
```
2013-11-29 04:08:22 -05:00
#### Process IDs
Fuzzy completion for PIDs is provided for kill command. In this case
2013-11-29 03:49:48 -05:00
there is no trigger sequence, just press tab key after kill command.
```sh
# Can select multiple processes with <TAB> or <Shift-TAB> keys
kill -9 < TAB >
```
2013-11-29 04:08:22 -05:00
#### Host names
2013-11-29 04:09:51 -05:00
For ssh and telnet commands, fuzzy completion for host names is provided. The
2013-12-23 09:16:07 -05:00
names are extracted from /etc/hosts and ~/.ssh/config.
2013-11-29 04:08:22 -05:00
```sh
2013-12-23 09:16:07 -05:00
ssh ** < TAB >
telnet ** < TAB >
2013-11-29 04:08:22 -05:00
```
2014-07-13 23:48:31 -04:00
#### Environment variables / Aliases
```sh
unset ** < TAB >
export ** < TAB >
unalias ** < TAB >
```
2013-11-19 11:42:57 -05:00
#### Settings
2013-11-19 11:29:36 -05:00
```sh
2013-11-19 11:42:57 -05:00
# Use ~~ as the trigger sequence instead of the default **
2013-11-19 11:29:36 -05:00
export FZF_COMPLETION_TRIGGER='~~'
2013-11-19 11:42:57 -05:00
# Options to fzf command
2016-01-19 11:09:58 -05:00
# Use ag instead of the default find command for listing candidates.
# - The first argument to the function is the base path to start traversal
# - Note that ag only lists files not directories
# - See the source code (completion.{bash,zsh}) for the details.
}
2013-11-19 11:29:36 -05:00
```
2015-11-11 23:47:52 -05:00
#### Supported commands
On bash, fuzzy completion is enabled only for a predefined set of commands
(`complete | grep _fzf` to see the list). But you can enable it for other
commands as well like follows.
```sh
2017-05-25 06:09:04 -04:00
complete -F _fzf_path_completion -o default -o bashdefault ag
complete -F _fzf_dir_completion -o default -o bashdefault tree
```sh

2015-11-03 13:14:38 -05:00
ag -g "" | fzf
2014-04-06 02:25:58 -04:00
# Setting ag as the default source for fzf
2015-11-03 13:14:38 -05:00
export FZF_DEFAULT_COMMAND='ag -g ""'
2014-04-06 02:25:58 -04:00
# Now fzf (w/o pipe) will use ag instead of find
fzf
2015-06-30 00:17:48 -04:00
# To apply the command to CTRL-T as well
export FZF_CTRL_T_COMMAND="$FZF_DEFAULT_COMMAND"
2014-04-06 02:25:58 -04:00
```
If you don't want to exclude hidden files, use the following command:
```sh
export FZF_DEFAULT_COMMAND='ag --hidden --ignore .git -g ""'
```
#### `git ls-tree` for fast traversal
2014-05-01 23:52:06 -04:00
If you're running fzf in a large git repository, `git ls-tree` can boost up the
speed of the traversal.
```sh
2015-03-29 21:15:05 -04:00
export FZF_DEFAULT_COMMAND='
(git ls-tree -r --name-only HEAD ||
2015-11-03 08:25:50 -05:00
find . -path "*/\.*" -prune -o -type f -print -o -type l -print |
sed s/^..//) 2> /dev/null'
2014-05-01 23:52:06 -04:00
```
#### Fish shell
2014-05-01 22:27:32 -04:00
It's [a known bug of fish ](https://github.com/fish-shell/fish-shell/issues/1362 )
2017-05-04 21:48:28 -04:00
(will be fixed in 2.6.0) that it doesn't allow reading from STDIN in command
substitution, which means simple `vim (fzf)` won't work as expected. The
workaround is to use the `read` fish command:
2014-05-01 22:27:32 -04:00
```sh
2016-12-14 01:37:27 -05:00
fzf | read -l result; and vim $result
```
or, for multiple results:
```sh
fzf -m | while read -l r; set result $result $r; end; and vim $result
```
The globbing system is different in fish and thus `**` completion will not work.
However, the `CTRL-T` command will use the last token on the commandline as the
root folder for the recursive search. For instance, hitting `CTRL-T` at the end
of the following commandline
```sh
ls /var/
```
will list all files and folders under `/var/` .
When using a custom `FZF_CTRL_T_COMMAND` , use the unexpanded `$dir` variable to
make use of this feature. `$dir` defaults to `.` when the last token is not a
valid directory. Example:
```sh
set -l FZF_CTRL_T_COMMAND "command find -L \$dir -type f 2> /dev/null | sed '1d; s#^\./##'"
2014-05-01 22:27:32 -04:00
```
